Lagoa de Albufeira is the beach where a coastal lagoon meets the sea, south of Caparica. When the lagoon is open to the sea, usually from May to September, it builds good sandbanks that give nice rights. On a clean south swell there are good waves, mostly lefts, whether the lagoon is open or not.

Local tips

Ask locally whether the lagoon is open: that is when the banks are best. Rips can be tricky.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent, but the quality depends on the sand: best when the lagoon mouth is open in summer.
Crowd and vibe
Calm and empty in winter, busy at summer weekends. One guide warns that some locals can be hostile, so keep a low profile.
Camping and vans
Small campsites sit around the lagoon, about 2 km from the beach. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards in summer, toilets and parking; beach restaurants.
Water quality
The ocean bathing point was rated excellent in 2025 (APA) and flies a Blue Flag in 2026; the lagoon point itself was rated good.
