Sandside is a small bay at Reay, right next to the Dounreay nuclear site. Clean lefts break off the reef on one side of the bay. On very big days they also break off the harbour wall. Because the bay is sheltered, it often has waves when the more open spots are blown out.

Local tips

Small radioactive particles from the former Dounreay plant have been found on this beach over the years. The beach is checked regularly and the official risk to beach users is very low, but leave any odd objects on the sand alone. A rip runs by the take-off. Park with care in front of the spot.

Getting there

Take the A836 west from Thurso, past Dounreay, and follow the signs to Sandside harbour at Reay.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fairly consistent. Its shelter makes it a good choice in winds that spoil the open beaches.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty.
Camping and vans
North Coast Touring Park at Melvich is about 7.5 km west; Thurso Bay is about 15 km east. Nearest campsite about 7.5 km away.
Facilities
None at the beach. A shop in Reay; everything else in Thurso.
Water quality
Sandside is not a designated bathing water. The Dounreay site operator monitors the beach for radioactive particles under SEPA rules; the official assessment puts the risk to beach users as very low.
