Whitsand Bay is a five-kilometre sweep of sand under high cliffs in south-east Cornwall, the closest surf beach to Plymouth. It needs a south-west swell and a northerly wind, and then peaks break along the whole bay. Access is down steep paths, which keeps much of it quiet.

Local tips

Red flags at Tregantle, the western end, mean the army range is firing and that part of the beach is shut. Stay near an access path, because the tide can cut you off.

Getting there

Steep paths at Tregantle, Freathy and Tregonhawke, with car parks and summer fields; none are suitable for wheelchairs.
