Agon-Coutainville's seafront beach lies on the Côte des Havres, between the Havre de Blainville to the north and the Pointe d'Agon to the south, with a very wide tidal flat and rock groynes. The Channel Islands and Chausey screen it from south-westerly swell, so it needs a solid westerly to north-westerly swell and gives small, soft waves. It is not a known surf spot like the beaches of the north-west Cotentin. The tide range is among the biggest in Europe, and at low spring tides the sea is far out.

Local tips

Treat it as a backup for a big winter swell rather than a destination; on most days the north-west Cotentin beaches around Siouville and Le Rozel are far better. Check the tide table first, as the tide drives everything here. The water-sports base at Coutainville is set up for sailing and sand yachting rather than surfing.

Getting there

Coutainville's seafront and sea wall run along the beach, with the resort's streets right behind it. The Pointe d'Agon, a protected natural site with a lighthouse, lies a few kilometres south.

Travel notes

How often it works
Rarely surfable. The Channel Islands and Chausey block most Atlantic swell, so it needs a strong westerly swell, usually in winter. The huge tides also limit surfing to the upper half of the tide.
Crowd and vibe
Surf guides barely mention it, so there is almost no surf crowd. In summer the beach is busy with holidaymakers, sailors and sand-yachters rather than surfers.
Camping and vans
The 2-star municipal Camping Le Martinet is near the centre of Coutainville, about 600 m from the sea, with more than 110 pitches. A year-round motorhome area (AireServices, 32 bays with electricity) is a short walk from the beach. About twenty extra bays are added out of season. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
This established resort has restaurants, cafés and shops along the seafront, and several lifeguard posts in summer. Its water-sports base focuses on sailing and sand-yachting.
Water quality
Results are mixed. In 2025 ARS Normandie rated the central beach excellent and Le Passous only sufficient, while the sailing-school beach and the Pointe d'Agon, towards the Havre de Regnéville estuary, were insufficient (poor).
