Surtainville is a long, quiet dune beach between Le Rozel and Hatainville, part of the sandy coast south of the Cap du Rozel, reached by the road to Le Pou; one surf guide lists it as Le Poux. It is a sandy beach break with some rock, with lefts and rights that can have real push and turn hollow around high tide; mid to high tide is usually best. It picks up the same westerly swell as Le Rozel with far fewer people, and visitors find the waves a little smaller and cleaner. Summer is usually small, autumn and winter bring the size, and a surf camp opened here in 2025.

Local tips
Surf away from the rocks at Le Pou itself; the long sandy beach has plenty of other peaks. Watch for rips and undertow, especially on bigger days. One visitor says the cliff to the north turns a south-west wind more offshore here than at Le Rozel, so it is worth a look when Le Rozel is choppy. In summer most people stay near the lifeguard post, so walk a few hundred metres for more room.
Getting there
From Barneville-Carteret take the road towards Les Pieux, turn off at Surtainville and follow the signs to the beach and Le Pou. Park by the beach or near the Les Mielles campsite and walk a few minutes to the sand. Surtainsurf, on the route du Pou, opened in 2025 as Normandy's first surf camp, with lessons and lodging.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Wannasurf says it breaks regularly. It takes the same west to north-west swell as Le Rozel, usually a bit smaller, and is best from mid to high tide between autumn and spring. In summer the waves are often too small.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually empty, and wannasurf describes the people in the water as friendly. On summer days and sunny weekends the crowd gathers near the lifeguard post, so walk a little along the beach for space.
- Camping and vans
- The 3-star municipal Camping Les Mielles is about 100 m from the sea, with direct access to the beach. It has more than 150 pitches, camper-van pitches with water and waste points, and mobile homes. The Surtainsurf surf camp on the route du Pou also offers lodging. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- There is a lifeguard post in summer, and Surtainsurf gives lessons. You can park by the beach or the campsite, and the village shops are about a kilometre inland.
- Water quality
- The monitored site at Surtainville (the beach opposite the RD 66) was rated excellent by ARS Normandie for 2025.
