Domburg, on the north-west coast of Walcheren in Zeeland, is famous for the rows of wooden poles that stand in the sea. The poles slow the current and make the waves break in fixed places, giving a hollow right and a long left. The most popular banks are just south of the village, past the golf course.

Local tips

Beginners should stay away from the wooden poles, which can cut you badly, especially when they are covered at high tide. Check the current before paddling out. The North Sea is about 5–7 °C in winter: a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.

Getting there

Walk over the dune from the village centre; the beach below the golf course is a short walk west.

History

Domburg hosts the long-running Domburg Classic contest and has been a stop of the Dutch national championships.
