East of Ostend harbour, by the new port and before the big dunes, the eastern pier (Oosterstaketsel) shapes the banks. Many Belgian surfers call it the best spot in the country, thanks to the moving sand, the wind and the way the harbour walls change the currents. It is surfed all year, most of all in autumn storms.

Local tips
Keep clear of the harbour wall rocks. In summer, keep out of the guarded swimming zones: a surf guide says surfing in Ostend is then only allowed at the Outside surf club, so ask the lifeguards or the club before you go out. The North Sea is about 5–7 °C in winter: a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.
Getting there
Cross to the east bank of the harbour (Oosteroever) by car, bike or the free ferry and walk to the beach by the eastern pier.
