A wind-swell beach on the north-west corner of the island of Fehmarn. It is best known as a wind and kite surf spot, but when a westerly gale blows down the Baltic it is one of the first places in Schleswig-Holstein to get rideable waves.

Local tips
Watch the wind forecast, not the swell forecast: go when a strong onshore wind has blown for some hours, and catch the last waves as it eases or turns. Stones lie along the shoreline. Share the water with the many wind and kite surfers. The Baltic is about 2–5 °C in winter, colder than the North Sea: a 6/5 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.
Getting there
Drive to Westermarkelsdorf on the north-west of Fehmarn and park by the dyke.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- The Baltic has no ocean swell and almost no tide. Waves only come with a strong onshore wind of about force 5–6 or more, so it works a handful of days a month in autumn and winter at best, and the waves die soon after the wind drops.
- Crowd and vibe
- Busy with windsurfers and kiters when it blows; at weekends crowded, but there is room for everyone.
- Camping and vans
- Ahoi Camp Fehmarn is about 2 km away; Belt-Camping-Fehmarn is about 3.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
- Facilities
- Car park by the dyke; little else at the beach.
- Water quality
- No EU bathing-water site lies right at the spot; the nearest, Fehmarn Gammendorf about 4.5 km away, was rated excellent in 2023–2025 in the European Environment Agency data.
