Local tips

Watch the wind forecast, not the swell forecast: go when a strong onshore wind has blown for some hours, and catch the last waves as it eases or turns. The Baltic is about 2–5 °C in winter, colder than the North Sea: a 6/5 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.

Getting there

Park in Hohwacht; the promenade runs along the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
The Baltic has no ocean swell and almost no tide. Waves only come with a strong onshore wind of about force 5–6 or more, so it works a handful of days a month in autumn and winter at best, and the waves die soon after the wind drops.
Crowd and vibe
Few surfers; it is a quiet resort outside summer.
Camping and vans
Camping Jipp and Camping Schöning are about 2 km away along the bay. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, cafés and shops along the Hohwacht promenade.
Water quality
The EU bathing-water site Hohwacht Kurstrand was rated excellent in 2023, 2024 and 2025 in the European Environment Agency data.
