Buarcos is the old fishing quarter at the north end of Figueira da Foz's bay, where the coast bends towards Cabo Mondego. Swell wraps along the rocky shore and gives several long, fast right-handers over flat rock and sand, some of them 300 m or more. It is one of the best-known waves in central Portugal.

Local tips

There are several rights along the Buarcos seafront, all similar; pick the one with the fewest people. Mid tide is the best bet.

Getting there

Buarcos is at the north end of the Figueira seafront avenue. Park along the promenade and paddle out from the rocks or the small beaches.

Travel notes

How often it works
It needs a solid swell to work, so surf-forecast rates it inconsistent; in autumn and winter it can run for days.
Crowd and vibe
When it works, it gets crowded with locals and surfers from Coimbra and Porto.
Camping and vans
Orbitur Gala, on the south side of the Mondego in Cova-Gala, is about 6 km away. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 6 km away.
Facilities
A town beach with lifeguards in season, toilets, showers, beach bars and wheelchair access. Cafés and restaurants on the seafront.
Water quality
Buarcos beach was rated excellent in APA's latest annual classification and flies a Blue Flag in 2026.
