Portugal Centro in the guides
Surfing in January Nazaré's Praia do Norte sits at the head of a submarine canyon that turns winter swell into some of the biggest surfed waves on Earth. Nearby Peniche has Supertubos for experts and sheltered bays for everyone else.
Surfing in February Supertubos, Peniche's famous beach break, and the sheltered bays on the other side of the peninsula give options for every wind. A cold, clear spell with easterlies blows offshore on most of this coast.
Surfing in March March is one of the most underrated months: winter-sized swells start to calm down, the days get long, and the line-ups are still empty from Brittany to Scotland. The water, though, is as cold as it gets, unless you head for the islands.
Surfing in May Peniche's Baleal bay is full of schools, and Baleal island shelters its corner from the north wind. There is a beach for every level on both sides of the peninsula.
Surfing in June Baleal is the busiest learning bay in the region, and its shelter from the afternoon north wind makes it the summer go-to around Peniche.
Surfing in July Baleal's bay is the summer base around Peniche: the island shelters it from the afternoon north wind, and it is full of schools.
Surfing in August The Baleal bay near Peniche is sheltered from the afternoon north wind, with Cantinho for learners and the more powerful Baleal Sul next to it. Ultra crowded in August.
Surfing in October Supertubos, one of Europe's heaviest beach breaks, starts its season, and the first giant swells of autumn can reach Nazaré's Praia do Norte.
Surfing in November Nazaré's big-wave season is under way, and Supertubos near Peniche is one of Europe's heaviest beach breaks on west to south-west swells.
Surfing in December Nazaré's giant-wave season is in full swing, and Supertubos near Peniche throws thick barrels on cleaner west to south-west swells.
