South of the long south pier of IJmuiden, a wide beach faces west-south-west. The pier blocks northerly wind and swell, so this spot needs a bigger north-west swell than its neighbours. When it is on, it gives clean lines while the open beaches are messy.

Local tips

Try it on stormy days with a northerly component in the wind, when the pier gives shelter. The pier itself closes to walkers in strong west winds. The North Sea is about 5–7 °C in winter: a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.

Park at the paid car park of IJmuiden aan Zee (Kennemerstrand) and walk north to the pier.
