The beach next to the long north pier of IJmuiden harbour is the best-known surf spot in the Netherlands. The pier shapes the sandbanks and gives some shelter, so it often has the best waves on the coast. With a south-west wind it can also give long lefts along the pier.

Local tips
Rips run out along the pier; they help you paddle out, but don't drift into the rocks. Respect the regulars at the main peak. The North Sea is about 5–7 °C in winter: a 5/4 wetsuit with boots, gloves and a hood.
Getting there
Park at the north end of Wijk aan Zee beach (paid) and walk south along the sand to the pier.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- The most consistent spot in the country: it picks up north-west wind swell well, and the pier helps when the wind is south-west. Still, really good days come only a few times a year.
- Crowd and vibe
- Busy at weekends and whenever it works, with surfers from Amsterdam and Haarlem. Wannasurf mentions some localism at the main peak.
- Camping and vans
- Camping De Duindoorn lies in the dunes about 1.5 km from the beach. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Surf shops, schools, rental and beach pavilions at Wijk aan Zee beach; lifeguards in summer.
- Water quality
- The EU bathing-water site Strand Noordpier (Velsen) is rated excellent for 2025 in the European Environment Agency data. It was excellent in 2023 and 2024 too. Some surfers mention pollution from the steelworks and the harbour nearby.
