Jardim do Mar is the wave that put Madeira on the surf map: a world-class right point that breaks over boulders in front of the village, with walls up to about 300 m long and barrel sections. It is a big-wave spot that holds swells well over 5 m. Since a seawall and promenade were built in the early 2000s, it only works for a short time around low tide and suffers backwash. Getting in and out over sharp boulders is dangerous.

Local tips

Only for expert big-wave surfers: wannasurf calls it pros or kamikaze only. Go with a local who knows the entry and exit, and keep paddling, as the rip pulls you out of position. Sets that catch you inside are punishing.

Getting there

The village is reached by road down from the ER101 or along the coast road from Paul do Mar. Park above the village and walk down to the promenade.

History

Save The Waves says the seawall and promenade cut the time it works from 4–5 hours around low tide to about 1 hour; many locals moved to Ponta Pequena and Paul do Mar.

Travel notes

How often it works
Breaks only with big winter north-west swells, then only for a short low-tide window since the seawall was built.
Crowd and vibe
Usually fewer than 15 surfers, all very capable. Respect the locals, who know the wave best.
Camping and vans
Madeira has only one campsite, the council-run Parque de Campismo do Porto Moniz in the Ribeira da Janela valley on the north-west tip, which reopened in 2026 after repairs. Elsewhere camping is only allowed in licensed forest camping areas run by the IFCN, with a permit.
Facilities
A few cafés in the village; a surf school runs nearby.
Water quality
The Jardim do Mar bathing site (Portinho) was rated excellent in the EU bathing-water assessment (EEA data from APA and the regional government) for the last three seasons.
