Lynmouth is a pretty harbour village at the foot of Exmoor's cliffs, where the East and West Lyn rivers reach the Bristol Channel. The surf is a long, fast left that peels along the boulder fan at the river mouth. It only breaks when a big west swell pushes far up the channel, so when it works everyone knows.

When it works

When it doesn't

✕ Normal swells don't reach this far up the Bristol Channel, and any northerly wind blows straight in.

Local tips

The take-off zone is small and the line-up is almost always packed, so be patient and don't drop in. Stay out of the river mouth: signs warn of a strong current and boulders under the surface.

Getting there

Park beside the river or on the sea front. More car parks are up in Lynton, and the cliff railway links the two villages.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fickle: it needs a large Atlantic swell to wrap up the channel, so it only breaks a few times each winter. It works at most tides.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded whenever it breaks, on weekdays too, with a strong local crew and surfers driving in from across the region.
Camping and vans
Sunny Lyn Holiday Park and Lynmouth Holiday Retreat are in the valley just above the village; a Camping and Caravanning Club site is at Lynton. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
Shops, cafés, pubs and toilets in the village.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 English bathing-water classification (Lynmouth). The rivers carry run-off after heavy rain.
