Leffrinckoucke carries on east from Malo beach: near the town it has a promenade, then it becomes a long, empty, wild beach backed by the Dunes de Flandre and dotted with wartime blockhouses. Like the rest of this coast it needs a strong north or north-east wind to make waves, which then break gently as small, fairly tidy peaks over flat, shallow sandbanks, best around low tide. It is quiet even when it works, a place to learn or cruise on a longboard rather than a destination, though in stormy weather the sea gets messy and powerful. The Dunes de Flandre kitesurf area is close by.

When it works

✓ A moderate N to NE wind swell that is easing, with a light southerly wind, around low and early rising tide.

When it doesn't

✕ South-westerly weather, which leaves it flat, or a strong onshore northerly that turns it into whitewater chop.

Local tips

Surf it around low tide when a moderate swell is running; in a real storm it becomes unpredictable. The wreck of the Crested Eagle, a steamer lost in the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, shows at low tide. Another dangerous wreck further east is marked with yellow buoys, so know where both are before you paddle around. A kite zone shares the beach.

Getting there

Park along the road near the beach (some car parks are a few hundred metres away) and walk onto the sand from the promenade. Heading east towards Zuydcoote and Bray-Dunes the beach gets wilder, with the GR120 path running through the dunes. Lifeguards only cover the central section in summer.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very unreliable, like the rest of the Dunkirk coast. It only breaks when a strong north or north-east wind has whipped up short, choppy waves. No ocean swell reaches it, so it is flat most of the year, especially in summer.
Crowd and vibe
Usually nobody is surfing. The beach is quiet except for the guarded central section, which draws families in summer. Kiters share the beach on windy days.
Camping and vans
Camping Mer et Vacances is a small site on rue Jean-Baptiste Charcot, a few metres from the beach. It takes tents, caravans and motorhomes, with hook-ups and a service point, and usually opens March to December. Camping La Licorne is a little further west in Malo-les-Bains. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
The central, built-up stretch has toilets, showers, a few restaurants, roadside parking and summer lifeguards. East of it the beach is wild dunes with no services.
Water quality
Official ARS tests rate Leffrinckoucke Centre Plage as good for 2025; it was excellent in 2021–2022. The nearest big pollution source is Dunkerque's port, a few kilometres west.
