Plage des Granges sits at the northern edge of the Forêt d'Olonne, at the mouth of the Havre de la Gachère channel, where the Olonne beaches meet those of Brem-sur-Mer. It is an open sand beach break with fun, short rights and lefts that can stretch to a hundred metres or more on good days. It picks up swell better than many neighbouring spots, works at all stages of the tide and rarely gets crowded, and the wild dune-and-forest setting is a big part of its appeal. A surf school on the beach makes it a regular venue for lessons.

Local tips
Spring, and March in particular, is when clean days are most common. Keep away from the Gachère channel mouth at the northern end, where the outflow can pull you along. Only the northern access is lifeguarded in summer; further south the beach is unsupervised, which also means fewer people in the water.
Getting there
From Olonne take the D80 north for about nine kilometres and follow the signs to the beach on Rue des Granges; a large free car park, with a summer snack bar, sits a short walk along a path from the sand.
