La Sauzaie is the Vendée's best-known wave and one of the few true reef breaks on the French Atlantic coast: hollow, fast rights and lefts breaking over a rock ledge just off a small cliff-backed beach in Brétignolles. The waves break close to shore, so the cliff top works as a natural grandstand, and the spot holds from under a metre to three metres or more. Even small swells have punch, and on solid days there are carving walls and the occasional long barrel. It is a regional classic, so it draws a crowd whenever it works, and it suits experienced surfers who are comfortable over shallow rock.

When it works

✓ A west to west-north-west swell of one to two and a half metres with a light east to north-east wind, from mid tide on the push to around high tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Low tide leaves the reef too shallow and partly dry, a very high tide pushes the wave against the cliff, and any westerly or southerly wind spoils it.

Local tips

Look at the reef at low tide before your first session so you know where the shallow sections are, then surf it from about two hours before to two hours after high tide. A west-north-west swell gives the longest rides, while south-west swells make it shiftier. Weekdays in May and June or September and October are the quietest times; on good weekends the line-up is packed and the local crew expects visitors to wait their turn. On swells under a metre, a small cove about 100 metres to the right also breaks, but into very shallow water.

Getting there

Take the coast road (D38) from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie towards Brétignolles and turn off at La Sauzaie, by the Avenue de la Corniche; park behind the car park and walk a couple of minutes to the beach, where the break sits in front of the lifeguard post (staffed in July and August).

History

The spot hosted the Vendée Surf Pro, created in 1999, which joined the ASP qualifying circuit in 2001 and was renamed the Protest Vendée Pro in 2009, held each spring at La Sauzaie. Local surfers who grew up on the wave include multiple French champion Gregory Pastusiak.

Crowd and vibe
It is the best-known wave in Vendée, so on a good day everyone around turns up and the line-up is packed and competitive. The local crew expects visitors to wait their turn; weekdays in May–June and September–October are quieter.
