Le Petit Minou, the main surf spot near Brest, is a cove below the Petit Minou lighthouse and its Vauban fort, at the entrance of the Goulet de Brest. A left peels off the rocky point and there are sand peaks with rights and lefts to the right of it, plus Les Moules, a shallow rocky reef beyond the point for experienced surfers. The waves are fast and fun with the odd barrel, and it picks up south-west swell easily, so it breaks more often than most spots around Brest. It is a low-tide spot with strong rips, and being next to the city it is nearly always crowded, with a protective local crew.

Local tips
It is a low-tide spot, so plan around the tide and go at dawn when low tide is early; avoid weekends and school holidays if you can. The line-up is competitive and sometimes aggressive, with plenty of shouting and wave stealing, so keep to the sand peaks unless you know the place. Reach Les Moules by paddling round the rocky point close to the cliff; the lefts there are the safer choice, and the end of the wave is very shallow over rock. Watch for rips running out of the cove.
Getting there
From Brest take the D789 towards Locmaria-Plouzané (about 20 minutes), turn left at the sign for the Plage et Phare du Minou and follow the lane to the car parks by the beach; the road passes through the old fort. There is also a bus from Brest.
History
In 1869 one of the first telegraph cables between Europe and the United States came ashore on this beach. Today the Minou Surf Club of Plouzané is based here, and it ran the Finistère bodyboard championship on the spot in March 2024.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- The most reliable wave around the Brest harbour area. It picks up south-west swell easily and also takes a solid north-west swell. So it breaks far more often than the sheltered bays nearby, at any time of year. Summer still brings many flat or too-small days.
- Crowd and vibe
- Nearly always crowded, and packed at weekends and in school holidays, since it is Brest's home break. The mood in the water is competitive and sometimes aggressive. Expect lots of shouting for waves and people catching waves already taken; come at dawn on a weekday if you can.
- Camping and vans
- The nearest listing is a small farm campsite, Camping à la ferme de Jégou, inland in Plouzané about 2.5 km away. The larger municipal Camping de Portez in Locmaria-Plouzané is about 4.5 km west. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Toilets, drinking water and car parks are by the beach. Minou Surf School teaches here, the Minou Surf Club is based on the spot and the Hôtel du Minou is nearby.
- Water quality
- Rated excellent by the French health ministry from 2022 to 2024 and good in 2025. This beach at the mouth of the Brest harbour had an occasional bad sample, in June 2025 and August 2026.
