Porthtowan is a popular sandy beach in a small village between St Agnes and Portreath. It is a good, fun beach break with peaks both ways, and the cliffs give some shelter from south-westerly winds at high tide. It is a favourite with local surfers.

Local tips

Check for sewage alerts after heavy rain before you paddle out. At high tide you can get cut off along the cliffs.

Getting there

There is one big car park near the beach, and the way onto the sand is flat.

Travel notes

How often it works
Fairly consistent: it picks up most Atlantic swells and stays rideable at most tides.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded at weekends and in summer with locals and visitors; the mood is mostly friendly.
Camping and vans
Porthtowan Tourist Park is in the village. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Toilets in the car park, a beach shop and café, and lifeguards in summer.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 classification, but sewage overflows are a real problem: Surfers Against Sewage counted 218 hours of spills here in 2025, and a September surf contest was cancelled because of sewage alerts.
