Porto Moniz, on the north-west tip of Madeira, is known for its natural lava rock pools. In front of them an exposed rock shelf takes the full force of the open Atlantic and throws up a powerful left. It only breaks on big swells, from about 2.5 m upward. Some locals say the biggest days are more of an open-ocean shorebreak than a surfable wave.
