Penhors is a long, pebble-backed beach by a small harbour in the middle of the Baie d'Audierne, towards its northern end. It is a sand beach break with some rock and easy lefts and rights that start working on less than 1 m of swell, so with its surf school it is one of the best places to learn in the bay. Beside the harbour a rocky left, Penhors reef, needs a good swell, light wind and the right tide; it is powerful, works only some of the time at mid to high tide, and is for experienced surfers only.

Local tips
Beginners should stay on the sandy peaks away from the harbour rocks and keep an eye on the current. Surfers heading for the reef paddle out from the harbour; it is a hard wave to get right, so watch a few sets first. Weekdays are quiet, but weekends can get busy with lessons.
Getting there
Drive to the harbour of Penhors, south-west of Pouldreuzic, and park near the lifeguard building; the beach and the school are right there. The surf school rents boards and has changing rooms and hot showers.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fairly consistent outside summer. The open beach picks up west to south-west swell from under 1 m, so it is one of the bay's more reliable small-wave spots. The reef by the harbour needs a proper swell and only works some of the time.
- Crowd and vibe
- Few surfers on weekdays, but busy at weekends, when surf-school lessons share the sandy waves. The reef draws a smaller, more experienced crowd.
- Camping and vans
- Camping du Littoral (open April to September) is about 300 m from Penhors beach. Camping Les Peupliers in Pouldreuzic is about 3 km inland. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- The beach has toilets, drinking water, a car park, a summer lifeguard post, a bar and a restaurant. The surf school hires boards and has changing rooms and hot showers.
- Water quality
- The official Penhors bathing site was rated Excellent for 2025, and all fourteen 2026 samples were good. The beach holds the Pavillon Bleu (Blue Flag).
