Sandwood Bay is a 1.6 km beach of sand backed by large dunes in the far north-west of Scotland, about 8 km south of Cape Wrath. There is no road: you reach it on a 6 km path. Sandbars and a couple of rock outcrops in the middle of the beach shape lefts and rights, and the Am Buachaille sea stack stands just off the coast.

Local tips

Plan a full day or camp: the walk in takes well over an hour with a board. The rock outcrops offer a little shelter on the paddle out. You are far from help and phone signal, so never surf alone, and watch for rips.

Getting there

From Kinlochbervie, drive north to the car park at Blairmore. A 6 km path leads over the hills to the bay; the track can be hard going when wet.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very exposed, so it picks up any swell going, often a bit more than Oldshoremore nearby. The same exposure means it is often blown out.
Crowd and vibe
Almost always empty. Visitors report days with no other surfer in the water.
Camping and vans
No campsite at the bay. Many visitors carry a tent and camp responsibly behind the beach.
Facilities
None at the bay. The nearest shop is in Kinlochbervie.
Water quality
Not a designated bathing water, so there is no official water quality result here. It is known as one of the cleanest, least spoilt beaches in mainland Britain.
