Siouville-Hague is Normandy's reference surf beach: the southern end of the Anse de Vauville, in front of the Cotentin Surf Club, with peaks spread over more than two kilometres of sand backed by the Biville dunes. It faces west and is fully open to swell, and the rocky Platé point to the south shelters it from south wind, so it is the go-to spot when the wind is from the south. The lefts and rights are soft at high tide and smaller and hollower at low, and best around mid tide on either rising or falling tide. In a solid swell, especially at low tide, the waves get hollow and demanding.

Local tips
High tide gives small, mushy waves and low tide smaller, hollower ones; mid tide is usually best, and locals say the falling tide often has the edge. A current always runs along the beach and gets strong with a big swell or tide, so watch your drift. The main peaks in front of the club get busy on good days, but walk north and you will find many others. In south or south-west wind, when the other beaches are blown out, this is the one to check.
Getting there
From Cherbourg take the road towards Les Pieux and turn off for Siouville-Hague. There is a large car park by the beach, a few minutes' walk from the sand, with outdoor showers and cafés in the village. The Cotentin Surf Club, founded in 2000, runs lessons, hire and competitions here all year.
History
The Cotentin Surf Club was founded in 2000 and settled at Siouville. It has grown into the largest surf club in Normandy and runs local events such as the Siouville Surf Open.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fairly consistent from autumn to spring, and wannasurf rates it as breaking regularly. It is open to west and north-west swell. The Platé point shelters it from south wind, so it often works when other Cotentin beaches are blown out. Summer is often flat; surf-forecast names April as the best month.
- Crowd and vibe
- The main peaks in front of the Cotentin Surf Club get busy on good weekends and in school holidays, with club members and lesson groups. Surf-forecast still notes few surfers overall. The long beach usually has empty peaks further north.
- Camping and vans
- The 3-star municipal Camping de Clairefontaine is about 350 m from the beach, near the surf school. It has over 100 pitches, camper-van pitches and mobile homes, and closes its gates at night. Le Ranch at Le Rozel and Les Mielles at Surtainville are further south. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
- Facilities
- The Cotentin Surf Club gives lessons and rents boards all year. There are outdoor showers by the big beach car park, cafés in the village and a lifeguard post in summer.
- Water quality
- Both monitored sites at Siouville-Hague, Clairefontaine and the beach by the lifeguard post, were rated excellent by ARS Normandie for 2025.
