Anse du Brick is a small cove of sand and shingle, about 250 m long, at Maupertus-sur-Mer east of Cherbourg, framed by low cliffs and woods and open to the north-west. It stays flat most days and needs a big west or north swell; then a peak forms on each side of the cove, with short, fun lefts and rights over sand. It is a winter spot, worth checking when the west coast is closing out, and on good days it is among the best waves around Cherbourg. It is best from low to mid tide on the rising tide.

Local tips

Pick the peak on the left or right side of the cove depending on how the swell wraps in and where the sand has settled; the rising tide from low to mid is the usual window. It is quiet on weekdays but fills up fast on good weekends, and visiting surfers have reported a cool welcome, so keep a low profile and speak French if you can. Park carefully: the roadside spots along the cove are awkward.

Getting there

From Cherbourg take the coast road east towards Fermanville; the cove is easy to find, with a car park in front of the beach, a picnic area, a bar and a restaurant. There are no lifeguards.

Travel notes

How often it works
A winter-only spot. The cove faces north-west and is flat for much of the year. It needs a big west to north swell along the north coast. It still breaks more often than Collignon, so it is the usual first check near Cherbourg when a big swell comes.
Crowd and vibe
Quiet on weekdays but crowded on good weekends. The locals have long been known as unwelcoming to outsiders. Be respectful, keep a low profile and don't paddle out in a big group.
Camping and vans
Camping Sandaya L'Anse du Brick (71 rue de la Carrière) overlooks the cove, with a footbridge down to the beach. It is open from early April to late September. Camping La Plage at Fermanville is another nearby option. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
Facilities
A car park in front of the beach, a picnic area, a bar and a restaurant. There are no lifeguards.
Water quality
Rated 'excellent' by ARS Normandie at the end of 2025 (listed under Fermanville).
