Collignon is the sand beach at Tourlaville, east of Cherbourg harbour and its huge breakwaters, and it is sheltered from almost every swell. It needs a very big west to north swell, about 2.5–3 m out at sea, to break, which happens only five to ten days a year. Then two peaks appear, a left along the concrete jetty and a second peak about a hundred metres to its right (east), and both can throw short, hollow tubes. On those rare days it is a regional classic with a local crew that knows it well; watch out for poor water quality after rain.

Local tips
Only check it when a major swell has the rest of the north coast at its limit; nearby Anse du Brick works more often and is the better first call. The jetty left is the main peak, and the locals who show up on the rare good days take most of its waves, so be patient and respectful or surf the second peak. Water quality off the harbour can be poor, especially after rain.
Getting there
From Cherbourg head east along the coast through Tourlaville and follow the signs for Collignon. There is roadside parking and a car park right by the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- One of the least reliable spots in the region. Cherbourg's harbour walls block almost every swell. It only breaks on a very big west to north swell, about five to ten days a year.
- Crowd and vibe
- Empty most of the year, because it is usually flat. On the few good days, the locals who know the wave arrive fast and the jetty peak gets crowded and competitive. Visitors should wait their turn, stay low-key or surf the second peak.
- Camping and vans
- Camping de Collignon is part of the leisure centre on the seafront, right next to the break. A second campsite, Camping Cotentin, is also in Tourlaville. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- The leisure centre behind the beach has toilets, showers, a bar, a restaurant and a swimming pool. It also has a sailing school and kayak and dive clubs, and the beach is supervised in summer.
- Water quality
- Rated 'good' by ARS Normandie at the end of 2025, like the nearby Rue des Dauphins beach. Cherbourg's harbour is next door, so surf guides still warn about pollution, especially after rain.
