The Plage Centrale of Capbreton lies just south of the harbour mouth and its wooden Estacade pier, the town's landmark. It is the first of a series of beaches separated by rock groynes that filter the swell, which makes this the classic refuge when the coast to the north is too big to surf. In summer the waves are gentle enough for learning, and in winter it stays fairly sheltered. When it is the only spot working, it is crowded without fail.

Local tips
Stay well clear of the Estacade itself: the currents around the harbour mouth are strong and unpredictable, and the beach right beside the pier is used for swimming and paddling rather than surfing. Watch for the rocks of the groynes. The mood in the water is usually friendly despite the crowd.
Getting there
In the centre of Capbreton, along the seafront boulevard (pedestrian only in July and August). Use the free Santocha car park or the free shuttle; the beach has disabled access, toilets and a lifeguard post from May to October.
History
Capbreton's wooden Estacade pier is credited to Napoleon III, who is said to have ordered it after seeing how hard it was for boats to enter the port.
