La Centrale is the central beach of Hossegor, in front of the seafront, between La Gravière to the north and La Sud to the south. It is a powerful, round beach break whose waves hollow out and can break as shorebreak, and it has hosted the world tour along with its neighbours. The bank rarely closes out in big, long swells. It is busy, especially in summer, and better suited to experienced surfers than its central location suggests.

Local tips

When it gets too big, the better surfers move north to La Nord and the schools move south to La Sud. Watch the rips, which run hardest from mid to low tide and on the dropping tide, and stay outside the lifeguards' red-and-yellow swimming flags in summer.

Getting there

In the centre of Hossegor: cross the bridge over the lake canal and follow signs to the Centrale. Parking on boulevard de la Dune is paid from 10 am to 7 pm, May to September, and fills early.

How often it works
It is consistent on any swell because it is open and close to the undersea canyon. When it gets too big, good surfers move to La Nord and surf schools to La Sud.
Crowd and vibe
This is the busiest beach in Hossegor. In summer, surf schools, holidaymakers and good surfers share the peaks. It is less tense than La Gravière, but expect company all year.
Camping and vans
Camping du Lac, on the east side of the Hossegor lake, is roughly 2 km away. The town motorhome aire (84 places, run by Camping-Car Park) is on the route des Lacs. In 2019 a court ruled against the town for illegal anti-camper signs. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
Facilities
The centre of Hossegor has toilets, showers, cafés, restaurants, surf shops, surf schools and lifeguards in summer. Parking on boulevard de la Dune is paid from May to September.
Water quality
All seven of Soorts-Hossegor's bathing sites are rated excellent in the official French rating (national open data, 2022).
