The windsurf and kitesurf capital of Tenerife, on the south coast below Montaña Roja. On the rare days with swell and light wind, small, fun waves break on sand and rock along the town beach, with a left over reef. Windsurfers own the bay when the trade wind blows.

Local tips

Watch out for windsurfers coming in fast near the beach. There are submerged rocks in parts of the bay; a second, sandy bay is better for learners.

Getting there

Leave the TF-1 at the El Médano exit and follow the signs into town; parking is close to the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
Rarely breaks well; it is a wind sports spot first.
Crowd and vibe
Relaxed in the water, but busy with windsurfers and kiters.
Camping and vans
Wild camping is not allowed on Tenerife. The island council (Cabildo) runs camping zones, mostly in the hills and forests, that need a permit booked in advance. The Canary Government's draft decree would ban tourist overnight stays in vans outside official campsites.
Facilities
A full town on the beach: cafés, restaurants, windsurf and kite schools, showers and parking.
Water quality
In the 2025 EU bathing-water results, the El Médano points were rated excellent.
