Reef is a short, very shallow right-hander at Praia da Empa, between Ribeira d'Ilhas and Pedra Branca. A trench in front of the reef focuses big swells, so the wave pitches and barrels almost straight away. It is fast and powerful, and the bottom is sharp rock with sea urchins. In the same bay, Backdoor is a slightly easier right.

Wear booties for the urchins. If Reef is too heavy, look at Backdoor in the same bay.

Getting there

On the road to Ribeira d'Ilhas, turn off just after the restaurant onto a rough dirt track; Pedra Branca comes first, Reef is a little further on.

Reasonably consistent in winter but needs at least 1.5 m of swell. Summer is mostly flat.
Crowd and vibe
Busy at weekends when it works, with a strong local crew. Respect the order on the peak.

Ericeira Camping at Mil Regos, on the N247 just north of town, is open all year and sits about 200 m from the sea.
