Ribeira d'Ilhas is a long right-hand point that peels from the north end of the bay over flat rock. It is the most forgiving of Ericeira's reefs and works on most swells, so it almost always has something to ride. On good days rides can run for a few hundred metres. It is the usual venue for Ericeira's surf contests.

Local tips

Arrive early: the car park fills quickly and the line-up gets packed with longboarders and schools. Watch where the locals sit before taking the main peak.

Getting there

The bay is 2–3 km north of Ericeira off the N247, with a big car park and a bar right above the waves.

History

It sits inside the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve (2011), and Ribeira d'Ilhas is one of the breaks the reserve protects.

Travel notes

How often it works
Very consistent: it works on about 150 days a year and on most tides. Exposed to west and north-west swells from autumn to spring, it still gets small waves in summer.
Crowd and vibe
It is crowded most of the time, with locals, surf schools and visitors. Expect competition for the main peak, especially at weekends.
Camping and vans
Ericeira Camping at Mil Regos, on the N247 just north of town, is open all year and sits about 200 m from the sea. Next to it, the Mil Regos motorhome area has about 15 places with water and waste disposal. Portuguese law limits motorhome overnight stays to 48 hours outside campsites and bans them in protected areas. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Lifeguards in summer, toilets, showers, a bar and a large car park. It is wheelchair accessible.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 official bathing-water classification (APA), and it flies a Blue Flag in 2026.
