A wide black-sand bay on the Tjörnes peninsula, just north of Húsavík on the north coast. It faces north into the open sea, so it can pick up small, clean peaks breaking left and right when the rest of the country is flat. The water is very clear.

Local tips

The wave is gentle, but this is a remote Arctic beach with no lifeguards, no surf school and very cold water, so go with friends who know cold-water surfing. The sea here is colder than in the south-west: wear a thick hooded wetsuit with boots and gloves. Winter days are very short.

Getting there

Drive north from Húsavík on the coast road; the bay is in front of you after the hill, and a gravel track on the left leads down to the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
The north coast only gets swell from the north, so it is less consistent than the south-west. It is rated a dependable beach break that works on all tides, with autumn the best season.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty: you will likely surf alone.
Camping and vans
There is no campsite at the beach; Húsavík is the nearest town.
Facilities
None at the beach; shops and services in Húsavík.
Water quality
Iceland is not in the European Environment Agency bathing-water data, and we found no official water-quality rating for this beach.
