A north-facing reef by the Garðskagi lighthouse, at the north-west tip of the Reykjanes peninsula. Lefts wrap over fingers of reef near the lighthouse and soften into a sheltered bay. It is an easy wave, but it needs a strong swell to wrap in and only works around high tide.

Local tips

Go from two hours before to two hours after high tide: outside that window it doesn't work. Icelandic reefs are sharp basalt and often shallow. Never surf a new break alone. The sea is only about 3–6 °C in late winter and 10–12 °C in late summer: a 5/4 or 6/5 hooded wetsuit with thick boots and gloves all year. Winter days are very short.

Getting there

At the Garðskagi lighthouse, just outside the village of Garður.

Travel notes

How often it works
South-west Iceland is open to North Atlantic swell from several directions. October to March brings the most frequent and powerful swell, along with storms that can make it unsurfable; May to August has flat spells, especially in the south-west. Garður only works when a big swell wraps around the point, and only near high tide.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty.
