Local tips
Surf it only at mid to high tide. Icelandic reefs are sharp basalt and often shallow. Never surf a new break alone. The sea is only about 3–6 °C in late winter and 10–12 °C in late summer: a 5/4 or 6/5 hooded wetsuit with thick boots and gloves all year. Winter days are very short.
Getting there
Grindavík was evacuated in November 2023 because of volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula. In its September 2025 update, safetravel.is says the town is open but the area is still hazardous: stay on paths because ground cracks can open, and leave if the evacuation sirens sound. Check safetravel.is before you go.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- South-west Iceland is open to North Atlantic swell from several directions. October to March brings the most frequent and powerful swell, along with storms that can make it unsurfable; May to August has flat spells, especially in the south-west. Antenas works on many days a year in a west swell.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually empty.
- Camping and vans
- Check whether the Grindavík campsite is open before you go; it may not run since the evacuation.
- Facilities
- Services in Grindavík are limited since the evacuation.
- Water quality
- Iceland is not in the European Environment Agency bathing-water data, and we found no official water-quality rating for this beach.
