A black-sand beach more than a kilometre long on the western tip of the Reykjanes peninsula, among lava fields and steam vents. It faces west into open swell, so it usually has waves: smaller wind swell in summer, long south-west groundswell and powerful storm swell in winter. Summer days suit learners with a guide.

Local tips

The undertow can be very strong and the cold tires you fast, so don't surf here alone. Learners should come in summer and go with a guide. The sea is only about 3–6 °C in late winter and 10–12 °C in late summer: a 5/4 or 6/5 hooded wetsuit with thick boots and gloves all year. Winter days are very short.

Getting there

On the Reykjanes peninsula, about an hour's drive from Reykjavík.

Travel notes

How often it works
South-west Iceland is open to North Atlantic swell from several directions. October to March brings the most frequent and powerful swell, along with storms that can make it unsurfable; May to August has flat spells, especially in the south-west. Sandvík is the most consistent beach break in the area.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty.
Camping and vans
There is no campsite at the beach; the nearest are in the Reykjanes towns such as Sandgerði and Grindavík.
Facilities
None at the beach.
Water quality
Iceland is not in the European Environment Agency bathing-water data, and we found no official water-quality rating for this beach.
