Hunts Bay is a small rocky bay on the south Gower cliffs, between Southgate and Pwll Du Head. Waves break over flat limestone ledges, with a fast, hollow left as the main wave and a shorter right. It only works on a solid south-west swell, but then it is one of the quieter quality reefs on Gower.

When it works

✓ A 1.8–3 m south-west groundswell around low to mid tide with a north to north-east wind.

When it doesn't

✕ Swells under about 1.5 m do not break properly, high tide covers the reef, and south-west winds ruin it.

Watch out for

  • reef
  • rocks

Best months

October, November, December, January, February, March

Local tips

The reef is shallow and sharp, so wear boots and check where to get in and out before you paddle out. Getting out of the water gets hard as the tide rises. Do not surf it alone.

Getting there

No road reaches the bay. Walk east along the cliff path from Southgate, then scramble down to the rocks.

Travel notes

How often it works
Inconsistent: it needs a bigger groundswell than the Gower beaches, so it works only a few times each winter.
Crowd and vibe
Usually empty or a few surfers, even when it is working.
Camping and vans
Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park is about 3.5 km west, above Three Cliffs Bay. Nearest campsite about 3.5 km away.
Facilities
Nothing at the bay. Shops, a café and parking in Southgate.
Water quality
Hunts Bay is not a designated bathing water. Nearby Caswell Bay is rated excellent in the 2025 Welsh classification.
