The beach below the La Coubre lighthouse is the southern end of the Côte Sauvage, where the coast starts to bend into the Gironde estuary. Three or four sandbars sit close together and give rights and lefts that can run long on a good day, and it is one of the most consistent spots in the region, working from small swells up to about three metres. It is also the most technical stretch of the coast: the shorebreak is fast and powerful and strong north–south currents run along the beach, so some guides reserve it for experienced surfers. Being lifeguarded in summer and easy to reach, it is the busiest part of the Côte Sauvage.

Local tips
Do not surf it alone: the rips are strong enough that rescues are not unusual, and sea mist can hide the line-up. In summer stay near the lifeguarded zone; if it is too crowded, drive two or three kilometres north and park behind the beach for emptier banks. Reports differ on the tide, with some locals preferring the couple of hours before high, so watch how the banks behave on the day.
Getting there
From La Palmyre drive north about 10 km on the D25 to the lighthouse; a free car park (2 m height barrier, no parking midnight to 6 am) leads to a sand path of about 420 m. There is a food truck by the lighthouse in season and the beach is lifeguarded in summer.
