The Conche de Pontaillac is a sandy cove on the western side of Royan, angled south-west into the mouth of the Gironde and well sheltered from the wind and from the full force of the Atlantic. It needs a sizeable swell to break, but then gives easy, forgiving beach-break waves that suit beginners and longboarders, and in winter, when the open coast is huge, it becomes the area's main fallback for experienced surfers too. Its town-centre setting, the cliffs and villas around the bay and the club on the esplanade make it the social hub of Royan surfing, and it is busy whenever it works.

Local tips
One regular reports that it works once the swell passes about 1.2 metres, from roughly two hours before high tide to an hour after. Weekends and school holidays get crowded with students and young surfers, so weekday sessions are calmer. The town lights let people keep surfing after dark on winter evenings.
Getting there
Follow the seafront from Royan towards Vaux-sur-Mer; park on the esplanade by the casino, on the seafront or in the large free car park on Avenue de Paris opposite the mini-golf. Surf Club Royan Atlantique, affiliated with the French surfing federation, runs lessons and rentals from the esplanade, and the beach is lifeguarded in summer.
