La Grande Côte is the long sand beach, about two and a half kilometres of dunes and forest, that runs from the Grande Côte point at Saint-Palais-sur-Mer north-west towards La Palmyre, right at the mouth of the Gironde. It is a beach break over sand with some rock, angled more to the south-west than the Côte Sauvage, so it takes some sting out of the swell. On ordinary days the waves are short and fairly soft, and sometimes suit beginners, but its real value is as a fallback when the Côte Sauvage is closing out, when the banks can be good and the left at the estuary end of the beach can throw a proper barrel.

Local tips
Check it when the Côte Sauvage is too big, and look at the left-hand end, towards the estuary, for the hollowest waves. Mid tide on either the push or the drop is the usual window. On big, windy days locals sometimes prefer Nauzan just around the point, and in summer the water can be full of jellyfish.
Getting there
The beach lies on the north-west edge of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer off the coast road to La Palmyre, with parking and toilets near the beach and a walk of 5–15 minutes; a section of the beach is lifeguarded in summer, and part of the stretch towards Les Mathes is used for naturism.
