La Vaca is a big-wave reef off the cliffs of La Cantera at Cueto, on Santander's wild northern coast near El Bocal. About 150 m out the deep water meets a raised rock reef, and that is where the swell stands up. It only breaks in big winter storms, with waves of 6 to 8 m and more. It is home to La Vaca Gigante, a paddle-in big-wave contest.

Local tips
This is a wave for big-wave specialists only, with a safety team and a plan for getting out of the water. The cliffs have no easy exit. For most people the best way to enjoy it is to watch from the cliff path on a big day.
Getting there
From the Monte-Corbanera area, drive towards the Instituto Español de Oceanografía near El Bocal beach and park behind it. A cliff-top path leads to viewpoints over the break.
History
La Vaca Gigante, a paddle-in big-wave contest run by the club ObsessionA2 with support from the Government of Cantabria and the City of Santander, is held here only when the forecast is big enough. The 2026 edition is its twelfth, and its waiting period now covers the whole year.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Very fickle. It needs a large, long-period winter swell, so it breaks only a few days a season, mostly from October to March.
- Crowd and vibe
- Only a handful of big-wave surfers paddle out, usually with safety support. On contest days thousands of people watch from the cliffs.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Cabo Mayor, by the lighthouse road above Mataleñas, is about 2.5 km east. It opens from spring to mid-September. Nearest campsite about 2.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Nothing at the cliffs apart from parking near the oceanography institute; everything else is in Cueto and Santander.
- Water quality
- There is no official bathing-water test point here, because nobody swims at this cliff coast.
Ideal conditions
