Somo is two kilometres of fine sand from El Puntal to Loredo, facing the entrance of Santander bay. It is one of the birthplaces of Spanish surfing and a surf reserve, with many schools, shops and surf camps and a relaxed, longboard-friendly feel. It is very consistent, with waves around 150 days a year. Sheltered inside the bay, it works when the open coast is too big. The main peaks are La Curva (long lefts and rights), El Camping (a long, powerful left) and the more changeable El Barco.

When it works

✓ A 1–2 m north or north-west swell with a south to east wind; most tides work, best on the rising tide.

When it doesn't

✕ Small summer swells barely reach it, west to north-west wind ruins it, and very big swells make it heavy and messy.

Local tips

It works on most tides, best on the rising tide. Each bank has its own best spot, so walk the beach before choosing. It is busy on weekdays and packed at weekends, with lessons all along the shore, and locals expect visitors to respect the peak. When the open coast is too big, everyone comes here, and the power can surprise you.

Getting there

Drive from Santander on the A-8 and the CA-141. Or take the passenger boat that crosses the bay from Santander to Somo every day. The beach is right next to the village, with parking, schools and bars.

History

The first Spanish surf contest was held at Somo in 1970. In 2012 the beaches of Ribamontán al Mar were declared Spain's first surf reserve.
