Covachos is a tiny cove on the cliff coast between Santander and Liencres, inside the Dunas de Liencres natural park, next to a tidal islet that joins the sand at low tide. The wave is a fast, fun right over sand and rock that breaks close to the rocks. Smaller waves wrap onto the sand. It is powerful and rarely draws a crowd.

Getting there

Covachos is signposted about 3 km from Liencres. From the parking it is a 15 to 30 minute walk. The last stretch down to the sand is steep, with a rope where the steps end.

Travel notes

How often it works
It works fairly often on north-west swells of 1 to 2.5 m. It only works from low to mid tide. At high tide the waves just dump on the sand.
Crowd and vibe
Normally empty on weekdays, with just a few surfers at weekends, thanks to the long walk and steep climb down. In summer you see more walkers and swimmers than surfers.
