Penfoul is a bay of sand and reef on the rocky Landunvez coast, north-west of Brest near Argenton. The main beach break gives short, fun lefts and rights over sand and rock that work through the whole tide, so it suits a wide range of surfers. At high tide a right-hand point break shows up on the right side of the bay, running off the rocks, and that is the part for more experienced surfers. Islands and reefs offshore take some size out of the swell, so it needs a decent swell to get going.

Local tips
Less experienced surfers should stay on the main beach break and leave the high-tide right to those who can handle rocks close by. Rocks and reef show more at low tide, so watch your footing going in. Weekdays are usually quiet, but it gets crowded at weekends when the swell is right.
Getting there
From Brest take the road to Saint-Renan, then the D105 towards Argenton, and follow the signs for Penfoul. Parking (free, plus roadside spaces) is a couple of minutes' walk from the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Fairly consistent from autumn to spring, but often flat in summer. Islands and reefs offshore take energy out of the swell. So it needs a solid west to north-west swell of about 1.5 m or more.
- Crowd and vibe
- Usually quiet on weekdays, with a few surfers out. It gets crowded at weekends when the waves are right. A surf school works on the beach, so give beginners room near the shore.
- Camping and vans
- We found no campsite with a reliable location in Landunvez. The nearest stopover is the Saint-Gonvel motorhome area by Argenton harbour, with 25 spaces. It has services from late June to early September; outside that, a barrier closes it and there are no facilities.
- Facilities
- The Sweet Spot surf school (surf, bodyboard and paddleboard lessons) is based in the hamlet at the beach. The tourism office lists the beach as unsupervised and mentions no toilets or showers; restaurants are in Landunvez and Argenton.
- Water quality
- Warning: the French health ministry rated Penfoul poor for 2025, after several bad samples that summer. It was rated good from 2022 to 2024, and all 2026 samples were good, but the new rating is not out yet.
