Luc-sur-Mer is a family resort on the Côte de Nacre, with a sand beach and rock ledges facing north-north-east into the Bay of the Seine. The Cotentin blocks Atlantic swell, so it only breaks on a northerly swell, a north-west swell wrapping in, or short wind swell after a strong northerly blow. Then it gives soft, short peaks both ways on the rising tide, good for groups and beginners. After Trouville it is one of the more regular spots on this coast, which is not saying much, and there are rarely more than a few surfers.

Local tips
Surfers gather at the foot of the jetty in the middle of the seafront. Come on the rising tide towards high water, when the waves break over sand instead of the low-tide rock shelves. The best chance is often the morning after a northerly gale, once the wind has dropped or turned offshore. In summer the swimming zone between the jetties, marked by yellow buoys, is off limits.
Getting there
From Caen follow the signs to the coast and Luc-sur-Mer. The beach is right below the 1.8 km sea-wall promenade in the town centre, with a car park near the casino, toilets and a summer shower on the promenade.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Inconsistent. The Cotentin peninsula blocks most Atlantic swell, so it needs a north-west swell bending in or a short burst of north to north-east wind waves. It is flat or too small on most winter days and usually flat in summer. Still, after Trouville it is one of the more regular spots on this coast.
- Crowd and vibe
- Uncrowded even when it works. Weekdays are usually empty, weekends bring just a few local surfers, and the mood is easy-going.
- Camping and vans
- Yelloh Village La Capricieuse is in Luc-sur-Mer, about 100 m from the beach and roughly 500 m west of the jetty. It is open from early April to early November. Nearest campsite about 0.5 km away.
- Facilities
- Three public toilets on the sea wall, one summer shower, and a sailing school. Lifeguards watch the area between the jetties in the summer holidays, and there is parking by the casino.
- Water quality
- Both Luc-sur-Mer bathing points, Petit Enfer and Digue Est, were rated 'good' by ARS Normandie at the end of 2025.
