Vaucottes is a small, wild cove at the foot of a valleuse (a dry valley that ends at the cliff edge) between Yport and Étretat, reached by a steep path. Rights and lefts break over chalk and flint reef with patches of sand, usually short and easy, so the line-up is mostly longboarders; a bigger swell brings a clearer left that can turn hollow. It is best on a rising mid tide. It is a local spot that is quiet on weekdays but fills up at weekends, so be discreet, and a helmet is not a bad idea when it is busy.

Local tips
Mid tide on the rising tide is the best window, and many rocks show at low tide. Getting out over the pebbles through the shorebreak is hard on bare feet, so wear boots. Swimming is banned here because of dangerous currents and there are no lifeguards, so don't come alone if you are new to surfing.
Getting there
Take the D211 towards Yport and turn off for Vaucottes. Parking is limited at the entrance to the hamlet, then it is a short walk down the valleuse to the beach.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- Surf-forecast calls it fairly consistent for this coast. It is fed mostly by long swells from the west and south-west. Summers are mostly flat, and it stops working at high tide.
- Crowd and vibe
- A relaxed spot full of longboarders, quiet on weekdays but crowded at weekends when it works. Wannasurf mentions localism, so follow the right-of-way rules and respect the regulars.
- Camping and vans
- There is no campsite at the beach. The nearest is Camping Le Rivage in Yport, about 2 km east. A small private van pitch (Campspace) in Vattetot-sur-Mer is about 2 km from the beach through the woods. Nearest campsite about 1.5 km away.
