Saint-Jouin-Plage sits at the foot of the Bruneval valley and the chalk cliffs, right next to the huge breakwater of the Antifer oil terminal, between Étretat and Le Havre. It is pebbles at high tide and sand at low, the only sandy low-tide beach on this stretch and one of the few without hidden rocks, and in autumn and winter a westerly swell gives modest peaks that suit beginners and longboarders on smaller days. It is a known option in south-westerly wind: the terminal funnels it, so it often blows harder here than in Le Havre, which draws kite and windsurfers. When the wind drops or changes, the harbour wall can drive a strong current along the beach.

Local tips
Surf the sandy low-to-mid tide and stay well away from the port breakwater: when the wind drops it can set up a strong current along the beach and towards the wall. The terminal also funnels south-westerly wind, so it often blows much harder here than in Le Havre, which is why kite and windsurfers like it. For surfing, look early in the morning with light easterlies.
Getting there
From Le Havre take the road towards Étretat for about 15 km and turn off towards Saint-Jouin-Plage and the Antifer terminal; there is free parking behind the beach. The beach has lifeguards in summer and the usual beach facilities.
History
The Antifer deep-water oil port was built in the 1970s for tankers too big for Le Havre. It cut off the supply of pebbles and wore away the old Bruneval beach, and a new promenade sea wall opened at Bruneval in 2017.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It faces west-south-west, so it catches westerly swells coming up the Channel. These are usually small and short, so it mostly works in autumn and winter storms and is often flat in summer. The Antifer breakwater also bends the wind and currents, so a good forecast does not always mean clean waves.
- Crowd and vibe
- Rarely busy. It is a quiet option for surfers from the Le Havre area. On windy days you share the water with kitesurfers and windsurfers, who like the strong south-westerlies here.
- Camping and vans
- Camping Le Grand Hameau is about 2 km from the beach, open mid-March to the end of October, with a motorhome service point. Two smaller campsites, Camping d'Antifer and Les Ombrages, are also in the commune. The village has a paid motorhome aire on Avenue Lord Louis Mountbatten. Nearest campsite about 2 km away.
- Facilities
- Free parking behind the beach and lifeguards in summer. No surf school or surf shop is listed here, so go to Le Havre or Étretat for gear and lessons.
- Water quality
- Rated 'good' by ARS Normandie at the end of 2025. After heavy rain, storm water and sewage can reach the sea and the beach has been closed as a precaution, so wait a day or two after a downpour.
