Matosinhos is the big city beach of Porto, sheltered on its north side by the long breakwater of the port of Leixões. The shelter makes it gentler than the open beaches, so it is full of surf schools and learners all year. Lefts break at the north end and rights at the south end, and on good days a right peels along the jetty with fast inside sections.

Local tips
The breakwater shelters it from the north wind, so it is a winter option when other beaches are blown out. At high tide, wannasurf says the rip along the rocks on the left gets you out fast. Don't surf after rain.
Getting there
Matosinhos is about 10 minutes from central Porto. Park along the seafront avenue, or take the metro or a bus from the city.
Travel notes
- How often it works
- It needs more swell than the open coast because of the breakwater, but it works in winter when others are too big or windy. Wave quality is often average, from closeouts to point-like peelers.
- Crowd and vibe
- Very busy, with many surf schools and learners. Crowded on good days and weekends, but beginner-friendly.
- Camping and vans
- Orbitur Angeiras, on the coast north of Matosinhos, is about 8 km north. Portuguese road law bans motorhome overnight stays outside authorised places in protected areas, Natura 2000 sites and zones covered by the coastal plans, and limits other overnight stops to 48 hours per municipality. Nearest campsite about 8 km away.
- Facilities
- Lifeguards in season, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, many surf schools and rental shops, and seafront restaurants. Metro and buses to Porto.
- Water quality
- Matosinhos Centro was rated 'poor' in APA's latest annual classification, one of the few such beaches in Portugal, and APA reported E. coli incidents there in June and August 2025. Wannasurf contributors describe outlet pipes on the beach. Check the APA notices and stay out after rain.
