Towan is the town-centre beach of Newquay, between the harbour and Great Western, facing north. The harbour and headland shelter it from westerly winds, so it is often clean when Fistral is not. It is a short, sometimes hollow beach break.

Travel notes

How often it works
Sheltered: it works when a big west swell meets south-westerly winds, which blow the exposed beaches out.
Crowd and vibe
Crowded in summer, right next to the town; some locals surf it on stormy winter days.
Camping and vans
Trevella Holiday Park is about ten minutes' drive from Newquay; the town has many holiday parks.
Facilities
Right below Newquay town centre: shops, cafés, toilets and surf hire close by; lifeguards in summer.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 English bathing-water classification (Towan). After heavy rain, town run-off can be a problem.
