Watergate Bay is a straight, two-mile beach north of Newquay, backed by cliffs. At low tide peaks break all along it, so there is room for everyone, from lessons to good surfers. Head to the north end for fewer people; the cliffs there also block northerly winds.

When it doesn't

✕ Westerly winds blow straight in, and the high tide leaves little beach.

Watch out for

  • rips

Local tips

Walk north to escape the crowds in front of the car parks. When the sandbanks are good, low tide can give very good waves.

Getting there

There are two car parks above the beach, plus a field car park on the road in. A sloping path and a few steps take you down.

Travel notes

How often it works
Consistent: it faces the open Atlantic and picks up most swells, and the long beach always has a peak somewhere.
Crowd and vibe
Busy in front of the car parks in summer, with surf schools and hotel guests; the far ends are much quieter.
Camping and vans
Watergate Bay Touring Park is minutes from the beach, and The View at Watergate Bay is about half a mile away. Nearest campsite about 1 km away.
Facilities
Toilets, a beach shop, a café, surf schools and board hire, and lifeguards in summer.
Water quality
Rated excellent in the 2025 English bathing-water classification (Watergate Bay).
