Vert Bois is one of the most surfed stretches on Oléron, a sand beach break backed by pine forest on the island's south-west coast, with Les Allassins a few hundred metres to the south. Rock banks offshore take some power out of the swell, so the waves here are usually smaller and softer than at Allassins or further south, which makes it a sensible choice for beginners and a fallback when the rest of the island is too big. Rights and lefts are mostly short, though on a good bank they can run for 100 metres or so. The water gets busy at weekends and in summer, but the mood in the line-up is described as friendly.

Local tips

From the main access look left (south) to Les Allassins, which is normally the bigger of the two; locals often check it before deciding where to paddle out, and many drift between the two when a real swell runs. Waves tend to get more interesting from mid tide on the push; low tide on the flat banks can be weak. In winter, when the south of the island is maxed out, the slightly sheltered Vert Bois is often the better call.

Getting there

Cross the free Oléron bridge, head for Grand-Village and turn north along the forest road to the Vert Bois beach car park; the sand is a short walk over the dune, and Les Allassins is about a 10–15 minute walk south along the beach.

Travel notes

How often it works
Surf-forecast calls it fairly consistent all year. Les Allassins, just south, is usually a bit bigger, so there is often a wave somewhere.
Crowd and vibe
It is the island's main meeting point for surfers, so it gets busy when the surf is good, especially at weekends. With two breaks side by side, there are still waves to share.
Camping and vans
Camping Les Embruns and Camping Fief Melin in Le Château-d'Oléron are about 4.5 km away. Nearest campsite about 4.5 km away.
Facilities
In summer there is a lifeguard post, toilets and showers at the main car park.
Water quality
The Vert-Bois monitoring point was rated good every season from 2022 to 2025, and all six 2026 samples were good.
